How To Clean Up Animal Dander
By Mike Krause of The Allergy Store
Do you or someone you know have a pet allergy? Did you just move into a new apartment and started having an allergic reaction? The problem is you are sensitive to a protein that is found in the saliva and urine of cats and dogs. Even rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and horses can cause allergy problems. This protein gets spread to the skin and fur of the animal when they lick themselves or empty their bladder. The protein dries to the fur or skin and is shed when the animal cleans itself or it sheds its fur. In addition, the dried protein-laden saliva or urine can also flake off on its own and will adhere to the first surface it touches. Since animal dander is very light it easily becomes airborne and that means it gets on the walls, floors, furniture and you. The good news is, because the problem causing dander is a protein, it can be denatured, deactivated and pretty much rendered harmless. You just have to know what to do and how to do it. First of all, if you are the one with the pet allergy you will either want to get someone else to do this or make sure you wear a good dust mask. We are going to work the room from the top down. Make sure you shower, wash your hair and put on clean clothes when you are done. Start by clean the walls. I have found a Swifter or something like it works best and is the fastest way to clean. Spray the cloth with a product a anti-allergen spray like Allersearch ADMS or ADS and wipe down the wall. This will remove and denature the pet dander. You don't need to soak the cloth, just keep it damp. Now wipe down all the hard surfaces like tables, picture frames and night stands. Use the ADMS or ADS spray for this too. The next thing you need to do really depend on your vacuum cleaner. If you have a really good vacuum that has a HEPA filter then go ahead and vacuum the floors and carpets. If the vacuum is not too good you will want to wipe down the tables and stuff again after you vacuum. Make sure you change out the ac filter and replace it with a good quality pleated filter. In sever cases you may want to have your ac coils and duct system professionally cleaned. A high quality HEPA room air cleaner like Austin Air will do a great job of removing any pet dander that is floating in the air and helping to maintain a dander free environment. You may have to do this a few times but in the end you will feel a lot better and in many cases you get to keep the pet.

I have had many customers who have taken up the wall to wall carpet and refinished the wood floors underneath because of allergy problems. It helps a lot not having the carpeting.
